How to Store Your Wigs Properly
Taking good care of your wigs doesn’t stop after washing—it also matters how you store it. Proper storage keeps your wigs looking fresh, tangle-free, and ready to wear at a moment’s notice. At Godiva’s Secret Wigs, we’ve been selling wigs since 1997, and we know that the right storage habits make a big difference in the life of your wig.
Our #1 Wig Storage Recommendation
The easiest and best way to store your wig is to simply fold it inside out and keep it in the clear bag it came in. (Do not take all the air out of the bag) This protects your wig from dust, keeps it clean, and saves space. Just make sure to store the bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
[Dani & Ro Tip] Always be sure your wig is completely dry before putting it back in the bag. Storing a damp wig can damage the fibers and cap. Also, if your wig has a scent of perspiration, smoke or perfume, be sure to air it out before putting it away.
Other Ways to Store Your Wig
While the bag method is our #1 recommendation, there are other storage options you may find helpful:
Wig Stands
A wig stand is great for short-term use, especially if you wear your wig often. It allows air circulation, keeps the wig’s shape, and makes it easy to grab and go.
Wig Boxes (Shoe Box)
For longer-term storage, a wig box can protect your wig from dust and environmental damage. Many clients use the original shipping box for this.
Mannequin or Styrofoam Heads
These are ideal for styling or displaying wigs, but they take up more space.
Travel Storage
When traveling, fold your wig inside out, place it in the clear storage bag, and pack it carefully in your suitcase. A collapsible wig stand is helpful for keeping your wig fresh once you arrive.
How to Prepare Your Wig for Storage
No matter which method you use, always prep your wig before putting it away:
-
Gently brush out tangles with a wig brush.
-
Wash if needed (see: How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step-by-Step).
-
Make sure it’s completely dry.
-
Store folded inside out in its bag, or place on a stand/box if using those options.
[Dani & Ro Takeaway] The easiest, safest storage method is the bag your wig came in. Simple, effective, and space-saving!
Storage Mistakes to Avoid
-
Direct sunlight: Fades fibers.
-
Heat sources: Ovens, heaters, hot cars or hot bathrooms can damage synthetic wigs.
-
Plastic grocery bags: These trap moisture and aren’t breathable. Stick with the original wig bag.
-
Storing damp: Always dry completely before storing.
FAQs About Wig Storage
Do I need a wig stand?
Not unless you have it styled and hair sprayed in a very particular way that you want to be able to just grab and go.
Can I store my wig in the bathroom?
Avoid humid areas like bathrooms. Always store in a cool, dry place.
How many wig bags should I keep?
We recommend keeping the original bag for each wig—it’s the simplest, safest storage solution.
