About Wig Trimming & Thinning Tools
What tools do you use to trim or thin a wig
These are the tools for changing a wig you already own. Our Hair Cutting Scissors and Gold Classic Scissors take length off and shape bangs. Thinning Shears do something different. They take weight out of a wig that feels too full without shortening it, which is often what a wig actually needs. Duck Bill Hair Clips and a Rat Tail Comb let you part the hair and hold back everything you are not cutting. The Wire Brush smooths the hair down first, so you are cutting a straight line rather than a wave. The 1 inch Hot Air Brush and an Adjustable Chin Strap are in this collection as well. Our Hair Cutting Kit brings the cutting tools together in one box if you would rather not gather them one by one. Trimming and thinning both apply to high quality synthetic fiber the same way they apply to hair, with one difference worth knowing before you start: fiber does not grow back.
Should you trim or thin your wig
A wig comes in one length and one shape for everyone who buys it. The bangs land where they land, and half an inch is the difference between hair you keep pushing out of your eyes and hair that frames your face. Thinning does the other job, taking weight out of a style that sits too full at the sides or too heavy at the ends.
Both are permanent. Fiber does not grow back, so take less than you think you need and look again before the second cut.
If you would rather not do it yourself, take the wig to a stylist who has cut wigs before. If you are near our store in Woodland Hills, California, we will trim or thin any wig you bought from us at no charge. Our Caring for Your Wig guide covers what we recommend first.
Wear the wig a few times before you decide. Length reads differently on you than it does on a stand, and the wig you were about to cut may be the one you keep as it is.
